The Olympic Mountain Bike Team placed third among 19 teams competing April 15 at the Washougal MX Challenge.
The 11 "Killer Whales" raced in perfect weather on a track that with 500 feet of climbing per 4-mile loop is the season's hilliest, reported Doug Ross, team director.
For the girls' team, ninth-grader Cassie Ross placed second in her age division. For the boys, sophomore Forrest Montgomery placed second after having placed third in the season-opening meet March 25 at Fort Flagler State Park.
The team's ninth-grade boys provided the teams' most competitive results. Milo Steimle won his second meet this season. Jack Pokorny, riding in his first mountain bike race ever, finished second.
The first-year mountain bike team meets 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 1-3 p.m. on Sundays at Blue Heron Middle School in Port Townsend; then it’s off to the trails.
Any high-school-age participant is welcome. Seven coaches, all volunteers, teach skills – from trail technique to biking etiquette. The team is sponsored by businesses and private donations.
