Arbor Longboards

Arbor! Arbor! Arbor!

Our first Arbor longboards order has arrived and they are beautiful. We have some boards from each Concrete, Flex, Blunt, and Carver series.

Arbor Skateboards

And a blurb about the Arbor Collective California based company: "We started Arbor in 1995 convinced that there was a need for brands willing to take responsibility for the impact their products have on the environment. For us, time spent riding had always provided a direct understanding of what’s at stake. We all need clean air to skate, clean water to surf, and snow to ride. For those of us who pursue boardsports, protecting the planet is about the environments we use everyday. It was becoming obvious that the boardsports industry, which relies on a healthy environment to succeed, needed to get more involved with protecting the planet.

To this end, Arbor was founded to design products around the goal of replacing as many environmentally harmful materials as possible, with functional, ecologically based alternatives. The mission is to deliver performance, durability, and style in the most responsible way possible. The result must be quality and reduced environmental impact."

Come in and check them out!

Olympic Discovery Trail Lake Crescent Crisis!

Followers of our blog, and dear friends,
The following is an email Nicole received from the President of Jefferson Trails Coalition. It is very important to continuing the growth of the Larry Scott Memorial Trail into the Olympic Discovery Trail. Please read on and take action!!!

"Next Monday, October 4th, the Olympic National Park has invited the public to an informational meeting to learn more about preliminary alternatives now under consideration for two segments of the Olympic Discovery Trail on the north shore of Lake Crescent. The meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Community Center (328 East 7th St. in Port Angeles).

Park staff will present some preliminary alternatives for developing the historic Spruce Railroad grade into a non-motorized, multi-use trail from the Lyre River to the Park's western boundary, including an alternative proposed by Clallam County. Both park and County staff will discuss key details of the proposals and will be available to answer questions during the meeting.

Based on input received during the initial scoping period, the park has developed six preliminary trail development alternatives, including the design plan submitted by Clallam County. Per the over one hundred responses from the public during this period, well over 85% of the responses have favored the County plan.

**Here's the issue at hand: If the Park adopts a design other than that of the County's , which complies with the standard for the ODT, the funding to develop the trail around the north shore of Lake Crescent will be lost. Specifically, the money granted to open up and refurbish the two tunnels on that side of the lake for a non-motorized, multi-use, multi-accessible trail could be withdrawn. This effectively blocks the ODT at that point on its route across the entire width of the Olympic Peninsula, which has been worked on continuously for over twenty years, involving hundreds of volunteers and tens of thousands of hours.

And perhaps the most dangerous aspect of this result is that it will force road and touring cyclists to continue to use highway 101 as the only east-west route alternative in this area. (See the attached presentation.) I believe this may very well eventually cost the lives of some of those travelers on this dangerous 12-mile stretch of highway.

In addition, of the hundreds of miles of trails throughout the Park, there currently exist only 2 miles of ADA accessible trail. This improvement would add over 10 additional miles for access by disabled users.

The purpose of this letter is to ask that you please consider attending this meeting in a show of support for the Clallam County's design.
In addition, please contact Representative Norm Dicks (norm@normdicks.com) and Senators Patty Murray (http://murray.senate.gov/email/index.cfm) and Maria Cantwell (http://cantwell.senate.gov/contact/) to ask for their support of the County's plan as well. We must protect the funding for this project in light of the critical importance to the integrity of the entire concept of the ODT and the economic and cultural interest of both Clallam and Jefferson Counties. Thank you very much.

Respectfully, Jeff L. Selby
Peninsula Trails Coalition,
Vice President, Jefferson County
(360) 385-0995"

Thank YOU for making a difference.

Thank you Claire and Bob

Thanks for being out on your bike and telling us about your adventures!

"On the Road to Shambala", a beautiful bicycle touring story: Sat, Sept 18th, 7 pm

The Broken Spoke and Jefferson Trails Coalition are pleased to host two amazing speakers, Bob and Claire, on Saturday September 18th at 7pm. $5 for tickets, proceeds go to building the Olympic Discovery Trail. Limited seats, please purchase early! $7 at the door.

Here is an excerpt from Claire:
"How appropriate that the term Shambala comes from roots of the Sanskrit words for self powered, or self propelled, just like a bicycle.

We continue to be self-fulfilled by being self powered. We’ve made a pact with each other that, for as long as we can, we’ll visit new lands first by bicycle. The experience of a place slowly revealing itself, at the speed of butterflies, is extremely rewarding.

Did we find our Shambala? Yes, in the Zen of our tandem’s spinning wheels. Whether you spell it, Shangri-la, shan-ge-li-la, Xiangbala, or Shambala, it’s all about the journey. Shambala is whenever you’re out there living it.

Today, Shambala has come to mean peace, tranquility or happiness — may you find your Shambala as well."

Please join us for a fund-raising multi-media presentation of our travels in Port Townsend at the Broken Spoke, 835 Water Street, on Saturday September 18 at 7:00 p.m. Proceeds will go toward building the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Bob and Claire Rogers celebrated 40,000 cumulative miles of tandem touring on this tour and have no plans to hang up the bike any time soon; They’re open to suggestions: visit their website at NewBohemians.net

Sept 12th Family Ride

Join The Broken Spoke on our monthly FAMILY friendly bike ride.

We will meet at the Broken Spoke at 10am on Sunday the 12th of September and pedal past the Maritime Center, the Skate park and head up to the playground at Chetzemoka Park for a break. Then we'll head past the Library and down to Kah Tai Lagoon for a stroll with the birds, and we'll end our little jaunt through town where we started well before noon. There is a bit of a hill getting to Chetzemoka, so the pace will be very slow, on the shoulder and tag-along, kid bike, trailer, cruiser style friendly. Since it's Grandparent's day, invite your grandparents or your favorite elderly neighbors along!

Don't have a bike? The Broken Spoke has some for rent, inquire within.

Please tell your friends, neighbors and everyone else. We'd love to make this a great "end of the season" ride! Cancelled if raining or too windy!

Ride up date....

So, if you just crawled out from under the rock that I road over on the trail today, this is a friendly reminder that the first of the Lost in the Woods series races is August 22nd at Gibbs Lake County Park. Locals need to represent and do us at the shop proud. The course is looking buff and as fast as I have ever seen it. We will be flagging this week so you will not get lost.

Next on the agenda. Labor Day we will be partaking in a large, Huge, okay massive ride. The final plans for the route are as follows we are only doing the Log Cabin Camp to Spruce RR to Muller to FS RD 3040 to Sadie Creek Ridge to Log Cabin Camp. This will be in the ball park of 50 miles. The hope is to do this at a slow pace and if you are saying to yourself I cant ride up Mount Muller, well neither can I so come hike-a-bike with me. There will be more info to come as we get closer to the ride. So stay tuned

Enjoy the sun while it is out.

Section of Larry Scott under construction

JTC Supporters:
Jeff. Co. Pub. Works is working on the portion of the Larry Scott Trail along Edwards Rd., 1/2 mi. S. of the Cape George Trailhead parking lot, and the section of the trail south of Discovery Ridge Rd. to Green Way will be closed as of Monday, Aug. 3rd for construction. So there will be no access to these parts of the LST. Please respect the access of the contractor and his equipment and workers in these areas by staying off of the trail during construction. The fewer interruptions they have, the sooner we'll all be able to get back out there to enjoy the trail once again.
This activity is part of the planned upgrade of these sections of the trail in order to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the trail. As a requirement of the grants given for this purpose, it will be fully ADA accessible and also available for travel by road and touring bikes, as well as mountain bikes and equestrian use.
Thanks, all. Carry on ... .

Great Family Ride

Thanks to Justin, Ash and Neah for meeting us at Fort Flagler for the Family ride last Sunday morning. We had a fabulous time and the weather was perfect. The tide was very low for our rest stop at East Beach and Justin amazed us his nature awareness skills. He waded out and brought back a couple of large starfish, several different types of seaweed, two different crabs and showed us a goeduck and seabean (an edible beach plant). The kids loved playing with all the sea life.

The next Family ride is tentatively scheduled for Saturday July 31st, details in mid-July.
Thanks,
Jason

Jefferson Trails Coalition work party tomorrow!

Fellow cyclists of Port Townsend, we all ride and know of the Jefferson Trails Coalition (JTC). Here is a personal invitation to donate your hard work and time!

OK -- we're ready to kick off our summer season of trail building and maintenance! Y'all come!

The Douglas Way portion of the Larry Scott Trail has been widened and re-graded and is ready for gravel. So this Saturday (5/22) we will be spreading, leveling, and raking gravel on that section. This will bring the trail up to near the standards of the finished portions of the rest of the LSMT. The County will begin work on the trail immediately to the west and north of this piece, so our goal is to have our work blend nicely with their finished product.

Work will begin at 9:00 AM -- stay as long as you can. We will be pulling back some of the balls of vegetation left at the edges of the freshly graded trail and spreading out the topping material. Bring gloves, shovels, rakes, hoes, McLeods, etc. We'll also need a few wheelbarrows.

Lunch will be provided for those who stay 'til noon. Water will be available, but bring any other drink you like.

Travel there on your bike!! Parking is limited -- park next to the trail at the entrance to Douglas Way, off of S. Discovery Rd. There is NO PARKING available anywhere else further along Douglas Way or on Green Way. This is a private road. Please respect the local residents' use of their road. We need their support for the ongoing use and maintenance of the trail. Thanks. See you there!

Cheers, Jeff

P.S. If you are worried about not having anyone you know there, bring a friend. Better yet introduce yourself and tell them that Nicole and Pete sent you!

We hope to see some of you out there cheering on your home town racers. Good luck Pete, Garth, and Jim.

Last night was a great Thursday road ride. You couldn't have asked for a more proper behaving wind. A little work on the way out and then a speedy tail wind on the return. The weather gets nicer every week so we hope to see more of you joining us on Thursday evenings.

I see the light!

So the light is returning to our skies in the evenings. also this coming weekend in daylight savings then the spring is in full swing. The Tuesday Thursday rides will be starting from the shop on Tuesday March 16th at 5:15 and will move to after 6:00 as the light moves higher in the sky.

A note from QTA:
Hi Guys.
Next week we will have extra daylight. So we will start having Wednesday work parties. We will be working on the return trail that leads from the lookout back to the start of the connector trail. DNR will start logging on the connector trail soon, so we need to get the return trail done as soon as we can. This will be a real fun project, and a little different than our other trail projects. Let me know if you can make it so I can have enough tools for everybody.
Thanks Jim

Dust off those tires!

We know we have been leading into this for a long time, if you consider a long time a month. The Tuesday/Thursday ride start in two weeks...... We know this is not much time to get things together, but you all can do it. Just to make it more interesting Pete will be riding his big knobby mountain bike on the Tuesday rides just to slow him down. We can't help what is going to happen on Thursdays, sorry. No really Thursday will be loads of fun.

Four weeks and counting to the 6 hours of Banner XC MTB race. Lots of fun to be had at the event. You can just be at the trail cheering or laughing. Pete and Nate are looking for volunteers to help support them at the 24 hours of Round The Clock on Memorial day weekend in Spokane. Stop in a let us know if you have nothing to do and want to watch a great race unfold all night long.

More new Skate Boards have shown up this week and are already moving our the door so check them out. More Antihero decks and shoes to come soon.

Cheers
The Broken Spoke Staff.

P.S.
Pete is trying to put together a locals rides booklet for ideas of where to go on Tuesday, Thursdays, and good routes for tourists. If you have a favorite road loop please go to gmap and trace your route. Then either save and send the link to the shop or print it and drop it by. We will create a binder full of rides for all abilities. We are working on the same thing for MTB rides.

On the Trails again.

A group from the shop went up to Anacortes on Monday to ride near Little Cranberry Lake. The ride ended being around Whistle Lake. We road for just over three hours. The trail was great, lots of climbing and well worth all the work when the next thing you knew down the hill you screamed. You can connect it with the other lakes near by and do over 50 miles. More trail then you can shack a stick at in one weekend.

This is a call for Skate event sticker and poster ideas for July. Anyone interested in submitting ideas please send them to our e-mail account thebrokenspokept@gmail.com or drop them by the shop.

Cheers for now and happy riding.

Trucks are here.

As many of you might be thinking I am not speaking of the Brown Santa (UPS). Really I am talking about Thunder Trucks and much more. An event will be happening at the Port Townsend Skate park in July, more details to come.

The Grand opening of the shop is slated for the second weekend of April More details to come for this as it goes closer.

Also "Lost In The Woods" is going to be putting on two races this year. Fall once again, a scary time of year for MTB races to be in the woods. As the winter grows closer and the light fades from the sky we ride faster knowing the rain is coming.
