End of July update

Last weekend, our first ever Strider bike race went well. We had four riders... leaving room for more competition but a good start. Lucas, Ana, Jack and Halsey all showed up to participate in our first ever Strider bike race. We had phenomenally sunny weather, a large family crowd to cheer the kids on, and lots of cones and obstacles. Thank you everyone for participating!
Thanks for the feedback on how we can make the next one even better!
The Broken Spoke looks forward to many more kids events, and we hope that our fellow riders do too.

The weekend of August 6 and 7th is a busy one... more specifically Sunday the 7th.
  • We've got The Broken Spoke Race Team heading up to DryHill in Port Angeles for the fifth and final NorthWest Cup race on Sunday.
  • Sunday is the Ride the Hurricane event at Hurricane Ridge.
  • The Port Townsend Bicycle Association has their yearly Ride for Cookies event: "Ride For the Cookies -It's time for the third annual Ride for the Cookies. The three requirements for this ride are: you have to like having fun; you think eating home made cookies is great; and you have a bicycle and helmet. The course is about 16 miles on roads and trails. We will meet at North Beach August 7th at 1:00."
We hope to see you out at any of these events!
~Cheers,

Sunday July 24th from 2pm- 3pm

The Broken Spoke is having a "Bike Rodeo!" Meet at Kai Tai Lagoon's parking area (near the Park and Ride) for an hour worth of fun and games on or with your bicycle.

Striders, balance bikes, trikes, training wheels, and two-wheelers invited. All ages welcome! Parents are asked to stick around and play too (bring your bikes). Don't forget your helmets :)

STRIDER RACE! If you or your child felt left out from the Trike Race in the Rhody Festival, now is your child's time to shine. We'll have a small course and stop watches to go with it! We hope to see you all there, and tell all your friends.

Saturday WOMEN's MTB ride

Friendly reminder that Saturday evening July 16th is The Broken Spoke's next women's MTB ride. We're meeting at 6 pm in the first parking lot on the right at Gibbs Lake County Park. Please RSVP to get in the carpool (leaving The Broken Spoke at 5:30 sharp) ; otherwise we'll meet you out there at 6pm.

Remember water, a snack, head and tail lights. It gets darker in the woods than you think (headlight is nice). Plan on just around two hours. This is a fun beginner/intermediate ride with many options for something tougher.

Email The Broken Spoke to register for the carpool. Let's Ride!
~Nicole
PS Please forward this memo onto other female mountain bikers you know.

Saturday July 16th Trail Work Party

Hi Trail Volunteers -
The Non-Motorized Transportation Advisory Board is sponsoring a trail work day this Saturday, July 16 from 8:30 am to 12:00 noon to continue clearing trail corridor (a section of the West Side Loop) along the Baker Street right-of-way. This section is an important link in completing the west side corridor trail. A map is attached with the trail corridor to be developed marked in orange. The easiest way to find this spot is to follow Hastings to Howard (turn left - south on Howard), then turn right (west) on 20th Street for a couple of blocks. Park at the top of the hill on 20th and walk north on the Barker Street r-o-w to the trail site.
This trail is being developed in steep wooded terrain and requires switchbacks. Bring shovels, rakes, maddox or pulaski picks, clippers, loppers, machettes, hand saws, work gloves and your other favorite trail clearing tools.
Snacks and water will be provided. Questions: call 385-4881.

We hope you can participate. We sponsor these trail work days only 6 times per year in: January, March, May, July, September and November. All participants must sign in, as the hours are counted in the City's annual volunteer work day tally.
