Next Section of LSMT

As construction will begin soon on the S. Discovery Rd. to Milo-Curry Rd. section of the Larry Scott trail (LSMT), Jeff County Public Works has sent out the following notice:

"This week a survey crew has been working on the site of the current trail project, between S. Discovery Road and Milo Curry Road.  Surveyors have set staking and flagging in advance of bidding and construction.  It is important that all of the staking remains in position during the months ahead.  For that reason, we are reminding the public that the trail right-of-way is not open for public use until after construction is completed in the fall.  Each end of the site has been posted accordingly."
Please comply with this request, so that work can proceed smoothly.
   Thank you all.

Summer begins!

Happy summer solstice everyone. We look forward to a great summer out on the trails with you and all your cycling friends.

We have three weekly shop rides:
Monday Lady Rides
Tuesday Road Rides
Thursday Mountain Rides
They all start here at The Broken Spoke, unless otherwise noted, at 6pm. Be ready with your water, nutrition, necessary clothing and anything else you may need. Ride length varies depending on the group. We stay as a group and welcome individuals of all levels.

Additionally, celebrate the start of summer fundraising for our local trail caretakers! Sunday June 24th, on the Larry Scott Trail. We hope to see you out there.  http://longestdayoftrailspt.wordpress.com/

Here's to a splendid summer, tailwinds, and excellent trails!

Friday work party on Larry Scott Trail

JTC Members/Volunteers:
OK, it looks like this Friday, 6/22, at 10:00 AM is the most popular choice for our pre-Longest-Day-of-Trails (http://longestdayoftrailspt.wordpress.com/) work party.  The task is to pull the poison hemlock from a short section of the trail close to the entrance to Douglas Way.  We will bag it up and leave it there for the county to pick up on Monday.  This is a great time to get this done, while the soil is still moist and soft, since the entire root must be removed to prevent it from growing back again.  Come on out even if you can only spend an hour or two. Let's get the trail looking good for our annual fundraiser on Sunday.

Bring gloves and shovels.  Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and try to resist that temptation to scratch that itch on your nose until you can get home and wash up!  Coffee and snacks will be provided, but bring your own drinks.

Douglas Way is a private road with limited parking, so let's respect the local residents by car-pooling if possible and parking off of their road.  Thank you.

See you there,
Jeff
President of Jefferson Trails Coalition

Test of Metal

So you think you're a tough mountain biker?  Check out NSCU's Test of Metal race coming up this weekend at Brennan Recreation Centre in Squamish B.C. That's where some of The Broken Spoke's Mountain Bike Team members will be, pushing through the relentlessness extent of the race. It's roughly a 47 mile mountain bike course with almost 22 miles of single track and (here's the kicker) over 3,937 feet of climbing.

 Check it out:

Port Townsend Named Silver Bicycle Friendly Community

Port Townsend - A Bicycle Friendly CommunityMay is National Bike Month with hundreds of events and thousands of riders celebrating bicycling nationwide. And a growing number of U.S. communities are taking steps to encourage residents to ride all year round — including the City of Port Townsend, which was named a Silver Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) by the League of American Bicyclists.
“We are not surprised that this was the largest number of new and renewing applicants that we’ve ever had,” said League President Andy Clarke. “The popularity of this program is clear evidence that investment in bicycling is a major catalyst in creating the kind of vibrant communities people want to live, work and visit. Port Townsend recognizes that simple steps to make bicycling safe and comfortable pay huge dividends in civic, community and economic development.”

The BFC program is revolutionizing the way communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability and transportation networks, while allowing them to benchmark their progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness. With this impressive round, there are now 214 BFCs in 47 states across America.
The Silver BFC award recognizes Port Townsend’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.

“We’re proud to have moved up from the Bronze level to the Silver level this year,” said David Timmons, City Manager for the City of Port Townsend.

The BFC program provides a roadmap to building a Bicycle Friendly Community and the application itself has become a rigorous and an educational tool in itself. Since its inception, more then 500 distinct communities have applied and the four levels of the award – platinum, gold, silver and bronze – provide a clear incentive for communities to continuously improve.

The League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation, and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. The League represents the interests of America’s 57 million bicyclists, including its 300,000 members and affiliates. For more information or to support the League, visit www.bikeleague.org.
